In Sinistar, a player pilots a lone spacecraft, and must create "Sinibombs" by shooting at drifting planetoids and catching the crystals that are thereby released. Sinibombs are needed to defeat the Sinistar, which is constructed by enemy worker ships that also gather crystals.

Fun fact: Once the Sinistar is completely formed, it says different phrases, one those phrases being, "Run coward", which sounds a lot like "Ron Howard", which led the developers to dub the game "Opie-star".
