Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo debuted in Mirage comics in 1984 as ordinary turtles in New York City. After they were exposed to Mutagen Ooze, they became mutated turtles looking for a good fight. The turtles were trained by their sensei, Splinter in the art of ninjitsu. From their home in the storm sewers of New York City, the Ninja Turtles battle villains like Shredder, the Foot Clan, and Krang.
